Weekly Report - May 29, 2011

"All athletes are disciplined in their training." 1 Corinthians 9:25a (NLT)

I was disciplined in my training this week, but I was not disciplined in my blogging.  My intent is to post mid-week entries to supplement these weekly reports, but I was quite busy this past week and didn't have much time for writing.  However, there will be a mid-week entry posted this Thursday, the topic of which will be my next challenge: the Washington DC Triathlon.  So stay tuned!

As far as training goes, I stuck to my normal schedule this week, but I once again skipped my Thursday swim in favor of a rest day, primarily because I stayed up too late Wednesday evening.  Also, I am transitioning to outdoor runs as opposed to treadmill runs.  I did my long run along the Columbia Canal at Riverfront Park.  It started pouring rain about 60% of the way through, so I got soaked!  And after doing my last several bike sessions on the spin bike, I was able to get back on my beloved 2011 Trek 1.5 for this week's long bike ride.  However, the highlight of the week was today's open-water swim in Lake Murray.

About five weeks ago, a few days after a tough Easter Sunday swim in the lake (the video footage of which shall never be seen by another human being), I posted the image and caption below on my Facebook wall:

The red line is (approximately) the swim course for the Washington DC Triathlon.
The yellow line is the distance that nearly killed me on Sunday.

Later that morning, I listened to a lecture by Dr. R.C. Sproul on the way to work.  The topic was Jesus's walk on the water, during which Christ told his disciples: "Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid."  That was just what I needed to hear after a frustrating swim, and today, I'm happy to report that I swam the red line distance in open water!  It's amazing what lots of practice, an Xterra Vortex 3 wetsuit, and a little Biblical inspiration can do!

Here is a report of all my workouts:
  • Monday - Ran 4.0 miles on the treadmill in 42:00.
  • Tuesday - Swam 1750 yards (0.99 miles) in the pool in 37:32.
  • Wednesday - Biked 17.2 miles on the spin bike in 1:00:00 and ran 1.5 miles on the treadmill in 15:00.
  • Thursday - Rest day (skipped swimming).
  • Friday - Ran 5.45 miles outside in 55:52.
  • Saturday - Biked 40K (24.8 miles) outside in 1:26:08.
  • Sunday - Swam 1600 meters (1.0 miles) in the lake in ~40:00.  (Thanks to my dad for being my lifeguard-in-a-kayak!)
Totals: Swam 1.99 miles, biked 42.0 miles, and ran 10.95 miles.

Happy Memorial Day!
