A Howlin' Good Time

Main entrance to the lodge
Did you miss me?  I didn't get my weekly post up last Sunday because I was out of town celebrating my beautiful wife's 30th birthday.  Our family and some friends spent a few days vacationing at Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, North Carolina.  What a cool place!  This was our first visit, but since everyone had such a fantastic time, I'm sure we will be at least semi-regular visitors in the future!

In case you've never heard of it, Great Wolf Lodge is a chain of indoor water park resorts based in Wisconsin.  The water park at the Concord lodge (which is one of the newest) features a number of water slides, a wave pool, a preschool play area, an activity pool, and a treehouse/splash pad featuring a 1,000-gallon water bucket!  My two-year-old son loved the Cub Paw Pool and my four-year-old son couldn't get enough of Slap Tail Pond, but my favorite attraction was the Howlin' Tornado, a pulse-pounding vortex slide that is very hard to describe.  You'll just have to experience it for yourself!

The whole gang
Aside from the water park, the kids enjoyed playing MagiQuest, going on a Wolf Walk and watching the Great Clock Tower Show, playing games at the Northern Lights Arcade (they love The Fast and the Furious), doing arts and crafts at Cub Club, and making their own stuffed great wolf!  They can't wait to go back!  (In fact, my wife is already planning a return trip for my 30th birthday.)

As for my triathlon training, it has been very sporadic over the past few weeks due to our vacation, so to see how that impacted me, I did an indoor triathlon yesterday morning.  Surprisingly, I did fairly well considering how relatively undisciplined I have been recently.  I swam 550 yards, biked 10 miles, and ran a 5K in 1:29:01, including transitions.  Those are the same distances as the Downtown Columbia Triathlon, which is coming up in a few weeks, so we'll see how I improve between now and then!
